police had the cabin surrounded at the time. >> there's no indication at all that he escaped during the -- >> we believe that he was still inside the cabin, yes. >> reporter: police picked up dorner's trail tuesday after someone reported being carjacked. >> christopher dorner jumped out in front of my truck and stopped me at gunpoint. he said i don't want to hurt you. just get out and start walking up the road and take your dog with you. >> reporter: police followed the suspect to a nearby cabin and that's when the person inside opened fire. cbs reporter carter evans captured the gunfire on his cell phone camera. two police officers were hurt. one is dead, one is wounded. officials focused their search in the big bear area after police found his truck burning in the woods here last week. police went door to door searching cabins for the suspect but cbs news learned dorner didn't get very far from where his truck was found. >> the cabin he was hiding out in, and we don't know for how long, it could have been sometime, was actually across the street from the police command post where they had been running the operation from.

>> reporter: dorner is believed to have killed four people since february 3. he posted a manifesto on facebook where he claimed he was seeking revenge for being fired from the lapd. until the remains are positively identified, lapd is going to keep their protective details in place. they are going to be guarding the 50 officers and their families who are on the manifesto list as possible targets for christopher dorner. reporting live south of big bear, edward lawrence. now back to you. >> edward, a couple of questions. do authorities have any idea how long it's going to take to identify that body they removed from the cabin? >> reporter: frank, they are saying it could be as little as two days or it could be several weeks. it just depends on what kind of forensic tests need to be done on that body to determine a positive id. if it's dental records then it could be done fairly easily but if it's a dna test, they have to send it off and get that

bay this morning. a suspect shot an officer following a chase. it happened in pittsburg. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is in pittsburg now where police are still on the scene at this hour. >> reporter: the officer who was shot is going to be okay. his injuries were relatively minor. he was treated and released. but officers are still here at the scene in pittsburg. they are manage out the shell casings trying to log out evidence in several blocks near 12th and maple. now, the man whom police say shot the officer was then shot by police. he's in the hospital in stable condition under arrest. a 30-year-old from oakley with a criminal helps of weapons -- a criminal history of weapons violations. two pittsburg officers tried to talk to him around 11:0 last night on maple and 12th. he started running away and then officers say he started shooting at them and the officer was hit. >> very tragic situation. a lot of emotions. we are glad he is okay and has

been treated and released from the hospital. >> reporter: police took several other people into custody for questioning. they say, though, that these people are not yet being charged with anything. this investigation is ongoing. this is also being investigated at the same time by the contra costa county district attorney's office since there was an officer-involved shooting. that's what we have right now live in pittsburg, anne makovec, kpix 5. some more developing news. this in the south bay. a bomb squad headed back out to santa clara neighborhood here later this morning. officers blew up some sort of device in the home's front yard last night. chp officers still surrounding the home at this hour and we are waiting for more information from a public information officer who is now headed to the scene. as soon as we get it, we'll pass it on. a shooting victim at santa cruz has helped police come up with a sketch of the suspect respect. a 21-year-old uc-santa cruz student was waiting for a bus

monday night when she was attacked from behind near natural bridges state park. at first she thought she had been hit with a gun. but doctors found a bullet lodged in her head. she is expected to survive. appear arraignment is set this afternoon for the suspect accused of killing a 13-year- old suisun city girl. officers arrested anthony lamar jones last week. he is suspect of killing genelle conway allen, whose body was found in fairfield's allan witt park. according to police, they had jones under 24-hour surveillance since the murder. former giants slugger barry bonds due to appear in an appeals court later today. bonds' lawyers hope to get his obstruction of justice conviction overturned. it all stems from his evasive testimony before a grand jury investigating a performance- enhancing drugs case. that was back in 2003. the ninth circuit court of appeals is expected to take bonds' case and rule at a later date. this has gone on and on and on and on the. >> it sure has. 6:07. now what's going on and on and

on for a while? >> sunshine for another four our five days i guess. >> it's going to be nice around the bay area, temperatures well above average but we have a chance of rain in the forecast too. we'll talk more about that in a bit. outside though we have some patchy fog out there. it is thick in some of the valleys especially in the north bay. the temperatures freezing now into santa rosa with some of that fog and visibilities down to a half mile. 36 degrees in livermore. 34 in the napa valley and 46 degrees in san francisco. high pressure still in control and we are going to see that patchy fog disappear and lots of sunshine coming our way today. these temperatures running above average by the afternoon. numbers usually running in the 50s and the 60s at this time of year. maybe about 5 degrees above average of 65 degrees in santa rosa, 61 san francisco. and 64 degrees in san jose. we have a chance of rain in the forecast. we'll tell you when coming up. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> one of our traffic alerts is still in effect. it's the one coming into san francisco southbound 101 approaching cesar chavez. one lane is still blocked. and we are seeing slowing from about the middle of hospital curve. but unfortunately, the accident

pope benedict will have no role in picking his successor. cate caugiran, kpix 5. take a look a bourbon street. crowds were smaller but the party went on for hours in new orleans. even the gloomy forecast and occasional showers did not stop all the party-goers. police following tradition at the stroke of midnight clearing the streets to mark the start of lent but as soon as they were gone the partiers were back. >> i don't think it stops. >> i don't think it does. >> july, august, september. >> it's ash wednesday so they have to go easy. >> yeah. we have lent. how about some traffic? >> it's been a crazy busy morning. we keep getting new accidents coming in. one of our traffic alerts has been canceled. we had two separate ones this morning. we still have one in effect. we are just getting word of this new problem spot. this is in daly city. they are closing a ramp from northbound highway 35 to northbound highway 1. it's because of a solo vehicle crash hit the guardrail in that area.

so again, just a heads up. they are temporarily shutting down that ramp. this is our one traffic alert still in effect. it's in san francisco. southbound 101 approaching cesar chavez. it is starting to jam up towards the skyway now. they have had one lane blocked off since our 5:00 hour approaching cesar chavez. so avoid 101 in the meantime. you will notice it's very heavy now. this 280 extension is going to be a much better option until they work to clear that accident. so all lanes are now open. they have been since about 6:00 this morning in sunol southbound 680 approaching calaveras. this took a while to clear it because a tow truck was stuck in the backup. look at this stretch of slow traffic even though all lanes are open. jammed up to pleasanton. sensors picking up backups from at least bernal. it continues to slow and it's slow anyway this time of the morning. through the macarthur maze things look good but they turned on the metering lights at the bay bridge. we'll have a live ak the that coming up. in the meantime we're talking weather and a gorgeous week

coming up. here's lawrence with more. >> a little something for everyone. a lot of sunshine if you like that. some spring-like temperatures and well some patchy fog out there right now. but maybe some rain finally making a return too. so if you are heading out the door this morning a little chilly in spots. we have a couple of patches of fog along the coastline and some of that showing up in some of the valleys, as well. so watch out for that early on. as we head toward the afternoon plenty of sunshine some mild temperatures in the bay and the valleys. and then warmer days ahead as we are going to see some of these temperatures soaring well above average for this i am too of year. high pressure sliding in overhead. a weak offshore wind trying to kick in the next couple of days will be enough to crank up these temperatures maybe near or just over 70 degrees in some of the warmest spots. so some very mild conditions as we head in toward the next few days through valentine's day and first part of the weekend starting out with patchy fog this morning, a lot of that will go and bring lots of sunshine toward the afternoon. tomorrow more sun and warmer temperatures. highs today into the 60s in the south bay, mid-60s in san jose,

64 in redwood city, east bay temperatures also up into the mid-60s in many spots even as high as 66 in the napa valley. you will see 50s and 60s as you head inside the bay. looking good over the next few days. some temperatures in the 70s. cooling off sunday, maybe we start talking about some rain by next tuesday. >> did i h ew? >> you made that up. >> you have to have something exciting in the forecast. 6:19. the city of san jose is officially on the record opposing the prop 8 back on same-sex marriage here in california. san jose will join san francisco in arguing against prop 8 when the case is heard by the united states supreme court next month. the san jose city council voted 9-1 to do that. the only no vote came from the mayor chuck reed. bay bridge drivers may help pay for the bay bridge bash that showcases 150,000 people walking across the new span over labor day. kpix 5's phil matier reports in

man who was standing by a car. they say he took off on foot. they chased him. and then they say he started shooting at them. that's when the one officer was hit. officers fired back at him. they hit him. he is in the hospital in stable condition. though say he had several warrants out for his arrests. >> our officers do an outstanding job every day. they come to work every day knowing they could face this. they acted on the threat and did what they were trained to do. >> reporter: police took several other people in for questioning, as well. they say those people are not yet being charged with anything just being interviewed right now. this investigation is going on in conjunction with the contra costa contra costa county district attorney's office. live in pittsburg, anne makovec

kpix 5. chp officers are at a santa clara home this morning after the bomb squad detonated a device in the front yard last night. kcbs radio's matt bigler is at the scene with the latest. >> reporter: frank, there's still a lot of evidence of this explosion in the front yard of this house. check it out. sandbags that were surrounding a hole that was dug by the bomb squad to explode this bomb- making material or chemicals that could be used to make a bomb. and that explosion distributed those sandbags across the front yard. here's what we know about how this all started. the chp served a search warrant at this house on humboldt in santa clara. they came across a homemade bomb or bomb-making material, something like that. they called in the bomb squad and conducted this operation. neighbors we talked to this morning said it wasn't a very loud explosion. in fact they didn't hear a secondary explosion which may tell you something about just how volatile this material was. all we know about the suspect

the rubble of a burned cabin in big bear. a charred body was found after a shootout and fire there yesterday. they are still waiting for forensic tests to positively identify that body. but again, an id with christopher dorner's name on it was found in the rubble. a man who was walking around with a human skull sparked a new police investigation on the peninsula. officers found a woman's remains on a hillside in brisbane last month. now there's an investigation to figure out her identity and cause of death. now, it all started with a 911 call about a man showing off a skull inside a coffeehouse. workers say joseph carrabino refused to give up the remains when confronted by police and according to the cops, he hurt two officers as they tried to arrest him. >> we made a reason request. reasonable request, and he

refused to release the skull. then he did. >> he led officers to where he found the skull and they found the rest of the woman's remains. today is the final ash wednesday for pope benedict. he resigns at the end of the month. the first pope to do so in about 6 centuries. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is at st. mary's cathedral in san francisco with more on today's service. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the ash wednesday service actually just started here at st. mary's cathedral. it's the beginning of the solemn lenten season for catholics as they look to the vatican for answers. earlier today, the pope made his first appearance since he announced that he was stepping down. >> today ash wednesday, we read in our yearly -- we begin our yearly lenten journey in preparation for easter. the 40 days of lent jesus is drawn to the desert and the temptations of jesus at the beginning of his public ministry. >> reporter: benedict was met with a huge crowd and a minute-

long-standing ovation. the faithful were gathered in a vatican city audience hall for his regular weekly audience. the pope saying to the group in several languages, he said he is resigning for the good of the church. now, benedict made the announcement on monday. he says he is not strong enough to continue as his -- or in his role as pope. the vatican is tasked with the job of finding a successor of saint peter. leaders made it clear benedict will have no role in choosing the replacement. this is uncharted territory for the vatican. the pope is the first pope to step down from his position in the past 600 years so there are a lot of unanswered questions like, what we will call him, what he will wear after he makes his final appearance. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, kpix 5. apparently americans didn't open up their wallets very much after the holidays. there was just a slight increase in row tail sales last month. here to chat about it -- there was just a slight increase in

retail sales last month. here to chat about it, kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >> reporter: only a tenth of a percent in sales in january. no doubt the increase in the payroll tax and higher taxes on those making more than $250,000 certainly weighing on consumers. although there were some categories that did well. home improvement stores up quite a bit showing the continued improvement in the housing market. auto sales were down a bit. that weighed on the overall number. there is a lot more talk and speculation about an iwatch from apple following reports of the "new york times" and the "wall street journal" that apple will make wristwear. bloomberg says apple has as many as 100 product designers working on iwatch. tim cook addressed a goldman sachs analyst conference yesterday but no hints on the iwatch coming down the pipeline. market working on some multiplety year highs. the dow only 146 shy of the all- time record as it started out

strengthen. maybe even bring in a weak offshore wind. that happens overnight tonight in toward tomorrow morning. will clear us out to the coast. so warmer days on tap for the bay area running well above average. maybe even some of the temperatures sneaking into the low 70s. traveling out of sfo no delays for today lots of sunshine coming our way this afternoon. across the country partly cloudy skies, 61 degrees in houston, 52 in denver, 43 in chicago, rain this morning in new york, turning to some snow later on tonight. as we head around the bay today, we have some temperatures looking very nice this afternoon. 65 in morgan hill. 64 in san jose. and 57 a little cooler in pacifica. east bay temperatures up into the 60s as well as high as 66 in pleasanton. 66 also in the napa valley. and about 64 degrees in pleasant hill. inside the bay 64 degrees in oakland. lots of sunshine this afternoon, 61 in san francisco. and 65 degrees in santa rosa. next couple of days plenty of sunshine, those temperatures probably maxing out as we head into thursday and friday and the first part of the weekend. then we'll start to cool down a little bit come sunday. and that's right, we could see

a couple of raindrops as we head in toward the middle of next week. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> we now have our count of third traffic alert of the morning. the other two have been canceled but this one is still in effect. so it's in daly city. it's a connector ramp that shut down from northbound highway 35 to northbound highway 1. solo car accident did damage to the guardrail so they have to shut it down for at least a half hour more. so this was an earlier traffic alert. now all lanes are open. southbound 680 approaching calaveras road, unfortunately we have some good sized backups from pleasanton down southbound 680. we are seeing brake lights from beyond the 580 interchange. heads up there. give yourself some extra time in that area. that drive time you will see in the middle southbound six is in the yellow up to 41 minutes now between 580 and 101. also pretty busy as well through the altamont pass. quick look at the san mateo bridge, where traffic is moving at the limit. and over at the bay bridge toll plaza the metering lights are on. and it is jammed up towards the

and one of the search teams raced past us and we followed them. only when we rolled up on the scene and they jumped out and started firing that we really knew what we had rolled up on. >> i hear some screaming -- [ gunfire ] >> reporter: authorities told us it stay low for our safety. moments ago we were caught in the middle of this gunfire between christopher dorner and authorities. we are told that two deputies have been hit by gunfire. their condition is unknown. you can see police and the s.w.a.t. team just a little bit down the road. they have dorner cornered in a cabin. >> the initial video was your cell phone, is that right? and were you worried about your safety? >> reporter: yeah, we were shooting with a cell phone and camera. there was a mix of the two video. but we were worried about our

safety, certainly. we were trying to find a position that was going to be safe from any high caliber bullets. it was reported that he had a .50-caliber weapon with him. and a car door is going to do nothing against a bullet of that caliber so we were trying to get down behind the wheels and engine block and sheriff's deputies instructed us to move back providing cover for us as we fell back a little bit. now, i can give you an up date. this morning, authorities are reporting that inside the burnt- out cabin, they have found a driver's license with the name, christopher dorner on it. of course, they are not going to have positive identification until the coroner consults all his tests. but that's about as good as you can get right now without the positive id from the coroner. >> you were out there yesterday, now you're out there this morning. what is the mood like quickly? we imagine there is a sigh of relief for law enforcement but it's also somber because they lost some of their own. >> reporter: yeah. it was a tragic situation.
